Poor Mountain View Paving would have to go out of business if they had to pay fines for their dangerous and illegal operation. Yes, it is within their rights to appeal the decision against them, however this is just a delaying tactic so that they can continue profiting from operating illegally. Mountain View Paving has been offered a place to move that would be legal. Move already! Stop destroying the Talent, Ashland and Medford areas. Louise Downing Talent Thanks to support staff Wednesday, Nov. 18 is National Education Support Professional Appreciation Day. I'd like to take just a moment and extend a giant thank you to all of the education support professionals in this valley. They truly keep our schools going! From bus drivers who pick up our students each morning and deliver them back home safely each day to the kitchen ladies making sure everyone has a full stomach to the aides in our classrooms and so many more — they are terrific. Public education depends on these wonderful employees to transport, feed, and help educate our wonderful students. Public education also depends on these folks to keep our buildings safe and clean, to run our offices and keep track of our students' attendance. Literally, we could not do it without them. So I'd like to say thank you. They do truly make a difference in this world. Judy Harris Teacher, Central Point School District and Oregon Education Association Executive Committee member Recorded jazz great, too Thank you for the column, "Hear me out about that jazz," by Peggy Dover. Her recommendations about local jaz artists are appreciated. However, she said nothing about jazz that is available on CD or DVD, and there are many great selections. My current favorite CDs are done by vocalist Diana Krall, produced by Tommy Lipuma and Johnny Mandel. The jazz orchestra background is fantastic, and Diana Krall's voice is treated (presented) as one of the musical instruments. When listening to her beautiful renditions I am frequently completely absorbed by the way her voice is used as the featured instrument. Among my favorite Krall CDs are "When I Look in Your Eyes," "The Look of Love" and "Wallflower." Paul Brown Central Point Crater Lake is threatened The Mail Tribune’s recent article “Siskiyous exempt from tighter stream buffer rules” highlights a key way of sustaining Oregon’s ecosystems. The Oregon Board of Forestry’s adopted rule of expanding riparian zones is an encouraging approach to protecting river ecosystems threatened by logging operations. As of now ecosystems within Crater Lake are also being threatened by logging operations. Old growth forests right outside Crater Lake National park’s boundaries are unprotected from clearcutting, which makes them attractive to logging companies. Clearcutting these forests would have a detrimental effect on ecosystems within the park. Oregon’s ecosystems should be protected from logging operations. Sen. Ron Wyden is planning to introduce a bill that would protect 500,000 acres of wilderness in and around Crater Lake National Park. This bill will ensure that the forests, wildlife and waterways within the park are not at risk. As Oregonians who cherish the health and well being of our forests, we should demonstrate to Senator Wyden and our congressman that this bill has support from the Oregon people.
