Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 15, 2006 Body is that of a Salem man who eluded police about a month ago A man found dead along a remote forest road near Butte Falls Monday had led a deputy on a high-speed chase about a month ago in a reportedly stolen car. Authorities last saw Richard James Wadley, 22, of Salem, alive on Feb. 15 when he sped away from a deputy who spotted him driving a gold, 1991 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen, said Sgt. Rich Fogarty of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Officials called off the midday pursuit on Highway 62 near Lost Creek Lake, fearing that the high speeds were too dangerous. After that, officials had heard that Wadley was hanging out in the Butte Falls area, but they hadn’t been able to find him, Fogarty said. He reportedly has extended family living in Jackson County. A Butte Falls area resident driving by spotted Wadley’s body lying along a Bureau of Land Management road off the 2000 block of Cobleigh Road at about 10:20 a.m. Monday, the sheriff’s department reported. Wadley appeared to have been dead for a few days, investigators said. There was no sign of homicidal violence, they reported. An autopsy done Tuesday found no physical injury that would have caused death, so investigators are awaiting toxicology reports, Fogarty said. Wadley had no socks or shoes on when his body was discovered, leading officials to suspect hypothermia, Fogarty said. Searchers are still combing the area to look for evidence. They are also still looking for the gold Honda sedan, he said. Investigators ask anyone with information about the case to contact the sheriff’s criminal investigation section at 774-6800.
