But one last-minute phone call and Bryant was back, albeit in a slightly different role. The Bryant-led RVSC Storm got a pair of goals from Nicole Vilarino and tacked on another late score for a 3-1 victory over Phoenix Kaos on Monday at North Medford High in the U19 girls championship match of the 12th-annual Rogue Valley Cup. Bryant and the Storm took second last year in what the coach thought was his final game. Kelly Vilarino, Nicole's twin sister, had other ideas. — She called me and asked me to coach, Bryant said. I said I'd do it, but she'd have to call the girls and get everything organized. She ended up sending out the names and getting registered with just hours to spare. In fact, I didn't meet the girls until our first game Saturday morning. Added Kelly Vilarino: I told Grant he's gotta be our coach, and he said he would, but as more of a mentor. Eight former Storm members and seven new competitors make up the 15-person roster, which consists primarily of former North and South Medford players. Kelly Vilarino hadn't played for the Storm in two years before Saturday's opening round. Some of the girls hadn't played since their sophomore year in high school, said Kelly Vilarino, a former North Medford High player who played for Bryant at the club level. I thought it would be something fun, being our last Cup. But we ended up winning it, so that was nice. Nicole Vilarino did her best to get the Storm off on the right foot. In the 25th minute, she sliced in to take possession deep in Phoenix territory, then whirled and pushed a shot past goalkeeper Katy Kunkle for a 1-0 lead. Vilarino struck again early in the second half with a sliding shot for a 2-0 advantage. We didn't get off to an optimum start, said Phoenix coach Karen Seeley, whose team is made up of players from five different Southern Oregon schools. We got the defensive end corrected and did a better job after that. But (the Storm) is a great team and Grant is a very good coach. Megan Franko, a Grants Pass High junior, cut the Kaos deficit in half with a goal from about 15 yards out midway through the second stanza. Nicole Vilarino, however, struck again, this time assisting Sarah Hollister for the game's final goal. The Rogue Valley Cup title was Bryant's seventh as a coach in nine appearances. I got a chance to just sit back and watch them have fun, Bryant said. This is it, though. Unless I get another phone call. SANTA ROSA UNITED BLUE 3, FC UNITED — ' FC United, a team from Phoenix, finished the tournament 3-2 after dropping the title game of the girls U13 division. Santa Rosa went 5-0 during the three-day event. RVSC SPIRIT 3, KLAMATH FALLS WILDFIRE — ' MacKenzie Krieser scored two goals and Sara Moores added another to lead the Spirit to the U12 Classic championship. Krieser and Moores each had goals in the first half for a 2-1 advantage at the break. RVSC Spirit sweeper Hilary Sinner was named MVP. The Spirit placed fourth last season. RVSC CRUSHERS 1, SANTA ROSA UNITED BLUE 0 ' The Crushers slipped past the Santa Rosa team for their fifth win in as many games and a U12 Premier title. The RVSC Crushers, who outscored their opponents 14-3 over the five games, defeated Santa Rosa by the same score on Saturday. RVSC HOT CLEATS 3, GRANTS PASS CHAOS 0 ' The Hot Cleats finished the U11 division with a 4-0-1 record. The RVSC team outscored its opponents 13-0 over the five games. Boys RVSC CENTAURS 1, RVSC COLLEGIATES 0 ' Fabian Garcia made sure the RVSC Centaurs wouldn't suffer the same fate as last year. Garcia scored off a header in the third minute of the second half to lead the Centaurs to the U19 championship. The Centaurs lost 2-0 to the Collegiates, known as RVSC United last Memorial Day, in the Rogue Valley Cup final a year ago. It was great to be able to get them back for last year and to win the title at the same time, said Centaurs' co-coach Mason Hansen, who shares duties with Chris Endrikat. It's just nice to end the season on a high note. The Centaurs finished the tournament with a 4-1 record. The RVSC Collegiates, who had a number of former prep standouts from local schools, ended up 3-1-1. FC SOUTHERN OREGON 5, RVSC CREW 0 ' FC Southern Oregon capped off a remarkable run through the tournament with a U17 championship. The Southern Oregon team, coached by new South Medford High boys coach Dave Kaufman, cruised to a 5-0 record by outscoring its opponents 29-0. On Monday, Ashland High's Thomas Golding scored his team-best 11th goal to give FC Southern Oregon a 1-0 lead. Steve Shafer, Tyler Nelson, Seamus Campbell and Joe Fallon also added scores. Goalkeeper Greg Miller was supported in goal by strong defensive play from Dane Happeny, Nico Walker, Scott Reed and Brendan Chapman. Corey Fisher was named MVP. RVSC BLACKHAWKS 5, ASC IGUANAS ' Michael Eagle and Dustin Torrey each scored two goals to lead the RVSC Blackhawks to a win in the U14 Premier finale. T.J. Flowers also scored to help the Blackhawks, who outscored the competition 19-0, finish 5-0. Eagle, the MVP, gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at the half, then tacked on another goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Torrey scored back-to-back goals over a two-minute span for a 4-0 lead and Flowers tallied late in the contest. The ASC Iguanas, an Ashland team, finished 4-1. GRANTS PASS KRYPTONITE 2, RVSC XPLOSION 0 ' The Kryptonite avenged an earlier loss to the RVSC Explosion to win the U11 title. The defeat was the first for RVSC, which ended 3-1-1.
