Michael was born June 23, 1943 to Elaine and Archie Nowland in Los Angeles, Calif. He grew up in Manhattan Beach spending every free moment surfing on an old-style long board. His love of the ocean afforded him many of his favorite adventures; taking a boat through the Panama Canal, sailing the Trans Pac race from California to Hawaii, and fishing for salmon in the wild waters off Kodiak Island, Alaska. Mike began his life-long love of traveling at an early age, and he visited every continent except Antarctica. His travels earned him the nickname of ‘Strollin Nolan’; he owned dozens of atlases, and drawer upon drawer of maps. He was happiest with an atlas on his lap, planning his next trip or remembering a route once taken. He ran the Colorado River and worked for numerous companies on the Upper Klamath and Rogue rivers. Michael joined the United States Army and served in Korea. He was an Oregon State Beaver and proudly wore his orange and black in support of his team. He played volleyball for O.S.U., as well as the Army. His athleticism kept him strong in spite of repeated bouts of cancer. He was a volunteer for the V.A. golf course in White City, Ore. and participated in their swimming program. He was a printer by trade, just like his father. He loved gardening, wine making, barbecuing and smoking salmon, and spending time with his family. The world was always of interest and he kept careful track of the latest news. His ability to make friends and stay in touch was a gift for all who knew him. He was affectionate, loyal, open-hearted, generous, and had a hilarious sense of humor. You couldn’t ask for a better friend. The family wishes to acknowledge with deepest appreciation Asante Hospice of Medford, Ore. and their very finest professional, compassionate, and supportive staff. They do the hardest work at the worst of times with grace and dignity. Thanks to them, Mike had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his lips as he set sail on his final adventure. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Palmer Nowland; his daughter, Marci Cartier (Paul); and grandsons, Cole and Cayden who adored their Grand-Papa; his son, Bryan Nowland; his brothers, Lance Nowland and Craig Nowland; his sister, Linda Cook; and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore. and a celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the American Cancer Society, the Veterans Administration for wounded vets, or the local hospice organization.
