Advertisement What she’s found since is a whole new perspective — and a new last name. "I’ve learned a lot about soccer and a lot about life through soccer, going to Oregon State and then coming to Western Oregon," says Stephanie Pogue, who married Evan in August. The two-time Southern Oregon Conference player of the year, three-time first-team all-league pick and two-time first-team all-state selection signed with the Oregon State University women’s program out of high school. She even broke into the Beavers’ starting lineup as a freshman. After being relegated to reserve status as a sophomore, Pogue determined that her educational pursuits needed to become her top priority. That prompted a transfer to Western Oregon University in Monmouth, which meant a step down to NCAA Division II soccer. "I decided I wanted to focus on getting my education," Pogue says. "I’m majoring in education, and Western is known for its education program." What she didn’t anticipate was an education in how to rehabilitate a knee. In her second match with the Wolves, Pogue tore up her right knee and was out for the rest of the 2002 season. "I was reaching for a ball, and the defender hit the inside of my knee and blew it out sideways," says Pogue, who suffered tears to the posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. "Everybody heard it pop. It was pretty loud." She took a medical redshirt as she rehabbed the knee. Now, she’s back to her spot as a starting forward for WOU, which is 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the early going. Another former SOC MVP, North Medford’s Lisa Munyon, is starting in the Wolves’ central midfield as a freshman. Pogue, 21, has one goal and three assists through those seven matches and says her knee continues to strengthen. Although she isn’t collecting goals at the record-breaking rate she used to, Pogue says life is good. "I’m pleased," says the 5-foot-5 dynamo who is easily Eagle Point’s all-time top scorer. "I’ll play soccer anywhere. "I look back and remember how easy it was to score goals then (in high school). It’s a little tougher now."
