Jeff Merkley introduced the Keep it in the Ground Act into the U.S. Senate, ending all new federal leases for oil, gas or coal extraction on public lands and waters. We are grateful for the leadership shown by our senator in both this new bill and his previously introduced Stop Arctic Ocean Drilling Act of 2015. However, the senator’s pioneering work in these two bills and his positioning on related issues nationally appears to be lacking in consistency with his not taking a formal position to oppose the (fracked) natural gas pipeline through Southern Oregon. This was illustrated in a recent Jefferson Exchange interview when Merkley indicated that he understood the Jordan Cove Pacific Connector Project would not increase natural gas extraction and fracking. Meanwhile, in its effort to obtain authorization for the terminal from the Department of Energy, proposer Veresen indicated that the project is based on the assumption of continued growth in the extraction of natural gas from Colorado. This would result in an increase in both fugitive emissions of methane and combustion of the gas. We are left wondering whether Merkley is misinformed about project consequences for global warming. I appreciate the League of Women Voters of Rogue Valley's attempting to get their notes of Tuesday work sessions and Thursday staff meetings posted online ( www.lwvroguevalley.org ) for those who know they exist; however, there’s really nothing like hearing the spoken words of those at the Jackson Room’s table. Citizens have been imploring the Board of Commissioners to have the captured audio (mp3) files swiftly uploaded to their new and improved county website for on-demand listening; however, this request has apparently not been cost-justified enough by the administration, yet. If Danny Jordan is listening, the amount of "interest" to justify posting audible meeting conversations can best be measured by data found on the county’s own website. Since Memorial Day 2015, there have been an average of 50-plus agenda downloads per week of the Tuesday work sessions (11 cancellations?) and 30-plus downloads per week for the Thursday staff meetings (two cancellations). This data collection should be sufficient evidence that citizens indeed desire "tuning in" to these untelevised meetings, especially since the 9 a.m. time frame precludes weekday attendance in order to accurately know what elected commissioners are up to. Kevin Goodrich Central Point Don't keep it secret I read in the Mail Tribune in Amy's column that a couple wanted to keep their daughter's adoption secret. Bad idea for all the reasons the aunt and Amy mentioned: health concerns, desire to know ancestry, hearing it from outside family. We have just welcomed our little adopted granddaughter. Three grandparents, an aunt, an uncle, a family friend, and a babysitter were all in court for the final gavel bang. At Christmas, we gave her a soft baby doll which was "adopted" into the family. No, she doesn't know what this means now, but she will learn that "adopted" means wanted and much loved by her extended family.
