BOYS BASKETBALL Defense carries Ashland to 56-48 win PHOENIX -- Ashland's zone defense wasn't very effective, but once the Grizzlies slapped man-to-man coverage on the Pirates Tuesday night things changed dramatically. Phoenix senior Gabe Willard riddled Ashland's zone with four 3-pointers in the first half as the Pirates built a 20-10 advantage. But once the Grizzlies switched defenses, Phoenix couldn't keep pace as Ashland carved out a 56-48 non-conference boys basketball win. "They were quicker than us and took advantage of it," Phoenix coach Randy Shipley said. "They shut down the passing lanes and we didn't make very good adjustments." Sal Pippa topped Ashland with 14 points, while McKay Challman added 12. Andy Bartels paced Phoenix with 16 points, while Willard, who set a school record for 3-pointers last season, finished with 14 points.
