VanderStoel carries Hidden Valley past Phoenix GRANTS PASS - Tim VanderStoel accumulated 144 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries and added a 78-yard kickoff return for another score to send Hidden Valley to a Skyline Conference-opening 35-26 win over Phoenix on Friday. After the Pirates started the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior tailback Eric Kessler with 7:27 to play in the second quarter, VanderStoel took the ensuing kickoff to the house and added a conversion run to tie it at 8-8. Senior flanker Bryan Kunst put the Mustangs (2-2 overall, 1-0 Skyline) ahead to stay with a 53-yard reverse with 3:11 to go in the second, making it 14-8. In the third, VanderStoel added 3- and 12-yard TD runs, and Josh Evans returned an interception 60 yards to the end zone. Senior quarterback/receiver Floron McGee had two second-half scores for Phoenix, the first a 12-yard scamper in the third, the second a 58-yard pass from senior quarterback Ross Ellis in the fourth. Hidden Valley compiled all 276 yards in offense on the ground. Kunst had 92 yards on four carries. Ellis completed 11-of-19 passes for 219 yards and one score for the Pirates (0-1 Skyline), but he was intercepted four times, including a combined three by brothers Calvin and Trevor Schmidt. Jake Cornelison recovered a fumble in the end zone and caught seven passes for 117 yards to pace the Chieftains, who gained 152 yards through the air and 50 on the ground. Cascade Christian junior receiver Mychal Sha hauled in five passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. With Glover's 28 carries doing the bulk of the damage, the Pirates amassed 391 yards in total offense. Wolfe, a junior quarterback/linebacker, completed 3-of-3 passes, all for touchdowns and 109 total yards. He ran three times for 63 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown, and made 10 tackles for Camas Valley, which didn't play a varsity schedule last season. Freshman linebacker Kyle Kievit registered a team-high 12 tackles.
