Grants Pass martial artist on U.S. team GRANTS PASS -- Tony Mendonca of Grants Pass was selected to the U.S. team that will compete in the World Games in Italy after earning three gold medals at the AAU Karate Championships Saturday. Mendonca took firsts in the 19-34-year-old male advanced Kata (form), 21-up advanced Kobudo (weapons) and 24-up advanced Kumite (sparring). Outstanding junior athletes at the event, which featured competitors from California, Oregon and Washington, were Tony Polk, Kim Straw and Kelsey Ebner, all of Grants Pass. Straw earned three gold medals in the 14-15 intermediate/advanced division, and Polk took three gold medals in the 16-18-year-old and 14-15 advanced classes. Ebner also captured three gold medals in the 10-year-old intermediate/advanced division.
