Why were these trees removed in a park already lacking sufficient trees? Were the trees diseased? — Steve D., Medford Not diseased, Steve, dead. That's what Medford Parks and Recreation Department officials tell us. The trees you're referring to were a pine tree and an oak tree, according to city arborist Adam Airoldi. He says both had recently died, and workers were "taking them out before they become a hazard." Airoldi says the cause of the oak tree's death is undetermined, but that it had been in decline for the past couple years. The pine's demise likely came about because of a one-two punch: insufficient water and heat stress. Airoldi says the parks department has planted 16 new trees in Bear Creek Park since winter, including ginkgo, beech, Hinds walnut and cedar.
