Dispatchers received reports of smoke coming from the park's shooting range on Kershaw Road at 4:45 p.m., according to Jackson County Fire District 3. District 3, the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded and found a one-tenth-of-an-acre grass fire being pushed uphill by high winds.  Crews quickly circled the fire and hit it with water to prevent the flames from spreading, while helicopters pulled water from a nearby pond to drop on interior hot spots. Sent to battle the flames were 12 engines from District 3 and ODF, two 10-person hand crews, a 20-person crew from Jackson County Community Justice, a tender, a dozer and two helicopters.  Crews carved a line around the fire in about two hours, but stayed overnight to mop up inside the perimeter. The fire grew to just under four acres.  It's the fourth such fire to start at the shooting range over the past month and the second in the past week, District 3 fire and life safety specialist Ashley Lara said. Ammunition is believed to be involved in the incidents, though specifically how is not known. "They're still investigating the details of that, but it really could have been anything," Lara said, adding possibilities include ammunition landing in tall, dry grass or a bullet hitting a rock and causing sparks. Tracer ammunition, which is banned during fire season, is not suspected.  Fire officials warned people to be especially mindful about activities that could start fires in the midst of a stretch of triple-digit temperatures and low humidity. R estrictions on mowing, chainsaw use, smoking and a handful of other activities that can throw sparks into tinder-dry brush on the 1.8 million acres of ODF-protected lands in Jackson and Josephine counties have been in effect since mid-June.
