South rises to the top Gielow, Singler take turns leading way as Panthers hand Indians first setback By KRIS HENRY Mail Tribune University of Oregon men’s basketball coach Ernie Kent was in town Tuesday to watch South Medford sophomore Kyle Singler. When all was said and done, however, Kent got an eyeful from more than just the 6-foot-8 standout as junior teammate Kendall Gielow put on a show in front of a packed house at South Medford High. Gielow shouldered the load early against No. 4 Roseburg until Singler took over late, guiding the sixth-ranked Panthers to a 66-54 triumph in Southern Oregon Conference play. The first-year Panther scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half and grabbed five of his seven rebounds in that span to help South (13-3, 6-0 SOC) to a 28-22 lead at intermission. "The intensity of the whole game really got me up and I just concentrated hard from the start," said the 6-7 Gielow, who entered the game averaging 9.5 points with a high of 27 while Singler recovered from a thumb injury. Advertisement "Kyle drew a couple guys away from other people and I just stepped in the open gaps and hit my shots." Gielow was 5-for-6 from the field in the first half and 8-for-10 overall, and knocked down his only two free throw attempts. "That was by far the best game Kendall’s played," said South head coach Dennis Murphy, whose team has won 21 straight in SOC play and 53 of their last 54 dating back to 2001. "No question about it, he was a difference maker out there. He didn’t force his shots and handled the ball well." And when it came his time to shine, Singler was his typical smooth self, scoring 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to go with four rebounds and a standout defensive effort on Roseburg’s Steven Davis. The flashy 6-1 senior guard, who entered Tuesday’s contest averaging a team-high 14.2 points in SOC play, managed only five points but had seven assists. Despite being hounded all game by 6-4 senior Isaiah Smith, Singler came up big when his team needed him most after Roseburg (15-1, 5-1) managed to tie the game at 28-all two minutes into the third quarter. "When we got them down they fought back and I give them credit for that," Singler said of the Indians. "They never gave up, but you wouldn’t expect anything less from a team that came in here undefeated." After a Gielow jumper, Singler scored on a drive to the basket and followed up a 3-pointer by Brent Johnson with a trey of his own. Another Singler jumper capped a 12-0 run to help the Panthers gain control of the game after Roseburg’s Jacob Schott committed three straight turnovers and the Indians came up empty on five straight trips downcourt. "I thought they hit some tough shots," Roseburg head coach Mike Pardon said of the South surge. "We played some good defense and they hit some tough shots at a critical time in the game. You’ve gotta give them credit." Roseburg’s Myles Walkup snapped the drought with a 3-pointer just inside the two-minute mark of the third, but Singler followed up a miss by Michael Harthun with an acrobatic putback with his back to the basket that even caused Kent to smile in disbelief. Roseburg didn’t get any closer than eight points from there and trailed by as many as 18 at 64-46 with 1:39 to go when South emptied its bench. After stubbing their toe from the free-throw line last Friday against Ashland, the Panthers were 10-for-14 in the fourth quarter to close out Roseburg and were 12-for-18 overall. South also connected on 25 of 45 attempts from the field, including a 4-for-6 effort from 3-point range. "It was nothing short of what I thought it was going to be," Murphy said of Tuesday’s matchup. "We knew it was going to be tough. There’s no question that Roseburg team is as good of a Roseburg team as we’ve played, and they’re the best team we’ve played this year, no question." Harthun added 10 points and Johnson finished with nine points and seven rebounds for the Panthers, while 6-8 Roseburg senior Jeff Stricklin had 12 points and Walkup added 11. Smith, who had been averaging 11.8 points in SOC play, was limited to eight on primarily breakaway layups thanks to the defense of Isaiah Adams.
