Oregon’s sophomore running back returned from a three-game absence to rush for a season-high 124 yards and two touchdowns in a 59-20 win over Florida State Thursday night in the Rose Bowl to lead the Ducks into the College Football Playoff title game. “It felt amazing to be with the guys and celebrate this win and knowing we are going to the national championship is amazing,” Tyner said. “It means a lot, I know everyone back home was watching. It’s crazy. To be in the Rose Bowl and have that kind of performance is a credit to the linemen and the receivers for blocking.” Tyner, who had not played since Oregon’s victory over Utah on Nov. 8 due to injury, averaged 9.5 yards on his 13 carries, which equaled his heaviest workload of the season. “I went into this game a little angry,” Tyner said. “I had to build my confidence up and I kept doing that. Running angry helped me a lot. I had been gone for so long, I felt like I needed to make a statement.” Tyner finished with his second-highest rushing total as a Duck. “I knew I was coming back fresh,” Tyner said. “I was coming back to the team at such an important time and that meant a lot to me to play with them again.” Tyner entered the game in the second quarter and was put to work right away. He ran for six yards on his first carry, 10 yards on the next play, and then four more after that. He had five carries for 31 yards during Oregon’s 19-play drive that ended with a field goal which put the Ducks ahead 11-3. Tyner ran for 23 yards on his next carry and then scored on a 1-yard run to give the Ducks an 18-6 lead. It was Tyner’s first time in the end zone since scoring twice against Stanford on Nov. 1. “Been a while,” he said. “It was great to celebrate with the guys afterward.” Tyner carried the ball six times for 69 yards in the second half and scored Oregon’s final touchdown on a 21-yard run. “A healthy Thomas Tyner helps everybody out,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. “We talked during the bowl prep that he was having a great last couple of weeks. He had a couple of hard-nosed, tough runs.” Tyner agreed that his success started in practice. “You play how you practice, the coaches always preach that,” he said. “Not just me, but everyone on the team. It was one of the best weeks of practice we had the whole year and it showed on the field.” Tyner talked early in the week about how his season had not been what he expected.
