South Medford Colts finish season with a split Local roundup KLAMATH FALLS -- The South Medford Colts nearly capped the American Legion season in style Saturday, coming within three outs of a doubleheader sweep against the Klamath Falls Hawks. South Medford scored five runs in the seventh to win the opener 11-6, then took an 8-7 lead into the last inning of the nightcap before the Hawks rallied for a 9-7 win. The split capped the Colts' summer season at 18-17. In the first game, Zack Jackson drilled his first home run of the year to highlight the Colts' seventh-inning rally. David Thrapp went 3-for-4 with five RBIs in the first game, and Cory Sweet went 3-for-3. Josh Tompkins and Dustin Butler each added two hits and two RBIs, with Tompkins earning his fifth win on the mound. Thrapp once again swung a hot bat in the nightcap, lacing two doubles for two RBIs. Jackson and Jim Maddox each went 3-for-4, with Jackson driving in two runs and Maddox adding one RBI. Juton Horstman chipped in two hits for the Colts. PHOENIX-TALENT TAKES TWO -- At Talent, Phoenix-Talent eased into today's age 16-18 Senior Babe Ruth state championship game with two wins at Hagler-James Park. Phoenix-Talent beat Josephine County (9-0) and Crater Lake (10-4) to earn a spot in the 5 p.m. championship game. Theron Hull went 2-for-4 with five RBIs against Josephine County, and Dave Westfall went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Westfall also came on in relief of Ben Williams to nail down the win, with Williams allowing six hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Against Crater Lake, Travis Dunlap hit a three-run homer in the fourth to pace Phoenix-Talent. Hull and Westfall each added two hits, while Chase Tester struck out five to get the win. In other Senior Babe Ruth action, Crater Lake beat Ashland, 2-1, and Ashland eliminated Grants Pass, 11-10. Crater Lake will play Ashland today at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to face Phoenix-Talent at 5 p.m. for the championship. MEDFORD ALL-STARS ADVANCE -- At Sutherlin, Medford's age 15 Babe Ruth all-stars used the long ball to beat Bay Area, 12-5, and advance into today's semifinals against Roseburg at the state tournament. Medford trailed 5-2 in the sixth before erupting for five runs, with Matt Skundrick providing the big blast, a two-run homer. Medford added plenty of cushion in the seventh with five more runs, highlighted by Clint Rodreick's grand slam. Rodreick went 3-for-5 with six RBIs to pace Medford, with Skundrick going 3-for-4. Rodreick also picked up his second all-star win, combining with Jon McCollum on the seven-hitter. Medford's semifinal today at 10 a.m. against Roseburg matches up the only two teams still undefeated in the tournament. MEDFORD TOPS UMPQUA VALLEY -- At Eagle Point, Medford's age 13 Babe Ruth all-stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and beat Umpqua Valley 6-4 in the South State tournament at Eagle Point High. Jeff Adams pitched seven innings with six strikeouts to earn the win for Medford. Rob Folsom came on in relief to get the final out. Adams and Folsom each had two of the team's 11 hits. Medford will face Gold Coast Monday at 9 a.m., with the winner playing again at 6 p.m. In other age 13 Babe Ruth action, Willamette Valley beat Klamath Falls, Gold Coast beat South Suburban and Central Point faced off against Bay Area. GRANTS PASS STUNS CENTRAL POINT -- At the Medford Nationals Little League Fields, the Grants Pass Nationals scored eight runs in the first inning and then held off a Central Point rally for a 12-11 win in District 8 Little League Tournament action. Sean Teaters hit a three-run homer for Central Point and Ron Lee and Brad Seegmiller each added doubles as Central Point outhit Grants Pass 14-12. Teaters also held the Grants Pass Nationals to four runs in four innings of relief. In other age 11-12 Major District 8 action, Matt Schmelzer hit a home run to help his Medford Nationals squad top the Grants Pass Americans, 10-4, while Roseburg scored four runs in the first and coasted to a 5-1 win over Rogue River in a game that featured four double plays. Softball OREGON FILLIES 2, WASHINGTON MUSTANGS 1 -- At Seattle, Brynnen Guthrie's single in the bottom of the sixth helped overturn a 1-0 deficit and keep the Fillies alive heading into today's final action at the 18-under Northwest Regional Softball Tournament. Keri Nelson hit a leadoff single to start the rally, with Rachel Manibusan pinch-running for her. Steph Coe followed with a sacrifice and then Megumi Hackett reached safely on an error and advanced to second on the play. With runners at second and third, Guthrie hit a hot shot that Washington's shortstop was only able to keep in the infield. Both runners scored on the play as Hackett never broke stride in notching the game-winning run. The Fillies face Magic Maddness of Washington today at 9 a.m., and will need three victories today to win the regional and advance to nationals. Kaitlin Wilson posted six strikeouts and only one walk to keep the Fillies within striking distance of the team from Olympia, Wash. Steph Adams garnered the only other hit for the Fillies.
