Sarah Rountree's big day in the hurdles the highlight for the Black Tornado girls squad By DON HUNT A notoriously slow starter in the event, Rountree got out quickly, attacked every hurdle and finished strong. When her time of 45.1 seconds was announced, Rountree and her teammates shrieked in delight. The clocking was a state best by nearly two seconds and was 2.5 seconds faster than she had ever run. The time was almost too good to be true. And in fact, it was. After comparing Rountree's time to the other participants in the event, North Medford head coach Mark Hodges and hurdles coach Dean Freeman adjusted the result to 47.8. "We only had one stopwatch on her (Rountree), and there's just no way she ran that fast," said Freeman, noting that runner-up Rosanna Medina was clocked in 48.4 and was only a few meters behind. "We couldn't in good conscious let that time (45.1) stand and allow it to get posted on the state-best list." Nonetheless, Rountree still had a great day. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.6 - that IS a state-best time - and ran a leg on the Black Tornado's winning 4x100 relay that clocked 51.2. Medina also had a memorable meet as she stunned defending district long jump champion Jennifer Lint of Roseburg. Medina sailed to a lifetime best of 16-101/2, a full foot better than Lint. The Indian girls won the meet, however, using sweeps in the pole vault, javelin and shot put to post a 79-66 victory. Roseburg's boys also triumphed, 75-67, as Joe Newton established a state best in the discus with a throw of 169-11. "Whatever time they give me is OK," Rountree said after learning 2.7 seconds had been added to her 300 hurdles clocking. "I still ran a strong race. "I was afraid of that race last year. I focused mostly on the 100 hurdles. But my conditioning is much better now, and I'm not afraid to go out there and sprint through every hurdle. "And I spent so much time the last two weeks on my starts that today it felt natural to go out hard." Medina, meanwhile, admitted she felt a bit intimidated going up against Lint, who won the state championship last year in the triple jump and was fourth in the long jump. But Medina immediately put the pressure on by hitting 16-101/2 on her first attempt, and the mark stood up for. She had four other jumps beyond 16 feet. Lint scratched on four of her six jumps and managed just 15-10. Later in the meet, she lost to teammate Kristen Bitter in the triple jump. "I've been jumping well in practice and I felt pretty confident going out there today," said Medina, who had a stress fracture in her right leg last year that kept her from jumping in most of the meets. "I still felt a little intimidated with her (Lint) out there, but it wasn't like I was freaked out or anything. I just concentrated on what I was doing." Sophomore sprinter Brittany Hodges also had a good day, winning the 200 in 26.1, the 400 in 58.9 and running legs on both winning relays. Hodges is still recovering from a badly sprained ankle she suffered in February in basketball. "I didn't get to do any preseason workouts, so getting into shape has been a chore," said Hodges, who was fifth in the 400 at the state meet last year as a freshman. "It's tougher this year, but I'm just taking it one day at a time and not worrying about what my times are." The Roseburg girls were led by Taylor Jones, who won the shot put (38-0) and javelin (119-1) and finished second in the discus (103-11). Bitter added wins in the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (34-4) and Melis Garner registered victories in the 1,500 (5:10.0) and 3,000 (11:24.0). Newton wasn't especially happy with his state-leading toss in the discus. His goal Tuesday was 170 feet, and he missed it by one-quarter of an inch. "All I'm doing now is technique work," said Newton, who is headed to Oregon State on a football scholarship. "I haven't really improved much since my sophomore year, and I'd really like to pop some big ones before this year is over." Other boys who recorded notable marks Thursday included: North Medford's Aaron Barlow, who sailed to a lifetime best of 20-8 to win the long jump. Barlow had three jumps over 20 feet, not including a 20-10 scratch effort on his final attempt. North Medford's Alex Grigas, who reached personal records three straight times to win the triple jump. Grigas' winning mark was 42-1. "I didn't think I'd do very well today because I was really sore from my workouts the past few days," said Grigas, a junior who went 41-9, 41-10 and 42-1 on successive jumps. "But I got loosened up and then once the adrenaline started to flow, I was fine." Roseburg's Brennan Garrelts, who sped to a 39.9 clocking in the 300 hurdles, the second-fastest time in the state, and a 15.1 time in the 110 hurdles. Roseburg's 4x100 relay of Garrelts, Blair Brundige, T.J. Mendenhall and Ryan Russell, which clocked 44.3. Mark Hodges - the Tornado coach - was tickled with the way both of his squads competed. Both are short-handed due to injuries and the fact that some talented senior athletes decided not to turn out. "We battled and battled," Hodges said. "We had a bunch of freshmen compete out of their gourds. "We're weak in certain events, and there isn't much we can do about that right now. But kids ran their guts out today.
