Rogue Valley Symphony gears up for season Germans, Celts, guitars and romance flavor the Rogue Valley Symphony's new season. The season kicks off Oct. 6 in Medford's Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater and winds up there April 28. In between are a half-dozen programs, some of them repeated several times in various venues, and some special programs. The Germans are the usual suspects: Bach, Beethoven, Brahms. The Celtic touch comes with harpist Laura Zaerr's Celtic Harp Concerto. The Falla Guitar Trio brings the guitars in April, and romance is scattered though the programs. Pianist Andreas Klein opens the season with Conductor Arthur Shaw and the orchestra with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 Oct. 6 in a show that repeats the next night at the Craterian. Also on the program, Respighi's "Roman Festivals" and Rossini's "Semiramide" Overture. The symphony's annual Discovery Concert, a special show for families and classical newcomers, is slated this year for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 20 at South Medford High School. The symphony's second series features Katheryn J. McElrath performing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for Flute, K. 133, No. 16, at Southern Oregon University's Music Recital Hall. The program includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 and Elgar's "Enigma Variations." December means the RVS's Candlelight Concerts, this time with Bach's Brandenburg Concert No. 6 and music by Haydn and Holst. Also featured are the Rogue Valley Symphony Brass and works by Gabrieli and Casals. Performances are slated for Dec. 7 at the Newman Methodist Church in Grants Pass, Dec. 8 at First Baptist Church in Ashland and Dec. 14 and 15 at Sacred Heart in Medford. A reception follows each show. February brings violinist Chin Kim and Saint-Sa�ns Violin Concerto No. 3, plus music by Smetana and Prokofiev Feb. 1 in Ashland, Feb. 2 in Medford, Feb. 3 at Grants Pass High School. A Symphony Sampler, another newcomer-friendly program, is set for Feb. 2 at the Crate. A Valentine Celebrity Recital Feb. 18 at SOU features Wu Han, piano, and David Finckel, cello. The fourth symphony series finds Laura Zaerr performing her Celtic Harp Concerto March 1 at SOU, March 2 at the Craterian, March 3 at Grants Pass High. Also on the program are von Weber's Overture to "Der Freisch�tz" and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Coming April 6 at SOU is the Spring Fling Celebrity Recital with The Falla Guitar Trio in a program called "Guitar Classics" that features music by Falla, Granados and Bach. The final series of the season features Brahms' "German Requiem" with guest conductor Paul French, the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers and the SOU Choir, plus Arthur Shaw's "Elegy," a work for the Columbine High School tragedy.
