Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 14, 1915 Orchard Heating Saves Fruit Trees from Jack Frost Orchard heating was general Tuesday night throughout the valley. Surveys of the situation this morning by the Rogue River Fruit and Produce association indicates that the damage from the frost was slight, and that confined solely to those orchards that did not heat. Weather conditions point to more heating again tonight, but of shorter duration. As a precautionary step, another carload of distillate has been ordered for immediate delivery. Practically every orchard in the valley was prepared for the coming of Jack Frost. Fires were lighted in some of the orchards as early as 12:30 o'clock. From this time until after sunrise, huge volumes of smoke were kept pouring into the sky. It is estimated that the aggregate cost of the smudge was $2,000. This morning, a heavy haze hung over the foothills. An unusual feature of the frost last night was its length. The lowest temperature was 24 degrees, at the Holloway orchards.   Prospects Brighter in Medford Than in California Judge S.S. Pentz, who recently returned from an extended sojourn of several years in the course of which he visited Mexico, and resided at various points in California, asserts that Medford and the Rogue River valley is as prosperous as any community he saw, and that its prospects for future growth and development are better. He says: ... "In all my travels — barring foreign travel — I found that Medford was far ahead of any city of equal size in respect to climate (save San Diego), progress, go-aheadativeness, enterprise, homes, cleanliness, order, genial, intelligent residents, up-to-dateness, general desirability, both as to opportunities, lands of any city of equal size and some larger, that I saw and visited in California. "I found there were but two classes in California, the rich and the poor, with a small sprinkling of middle class. "I found the larger California cities were foreignized; that morality was at a very low basis; that the dollar was unreachably beyond the best and most uplifting thoughts and aspirations of the people; that inhumanity and almost total disregard of the sacredness and value of human life were much in evidence; that in San Francisco the police force was most ornamental and inefficient."
