St. Mary's tops Gilchrist St. Marys coach Tim Pflug knew his team needed to play a little role reversal if the Crusaders were to avoid a familiar refrain Saturday night. The Crusaders did just that, rolling to a 19-7 advantage in the first quarter, en route to a 63-40 Southern Cascade League boys basketball upset over fifth-ranked Gilchrist. Gilchrist seized command early in sweeping the Crusaders including a 92-62 rout on the road. "The way this team got to us last year, was that they got a quick lead and we could never seem to catch up," Pflug said. "They had our number. Tonight, we wanted to get a fast start and we did." Chris Murphy, who led the Crusaders with 24 points, scored 10 points as St. Marys nabbed a 19-7 cushion after one quarter. Michael Fiddler added nine of his 15 points in the first half as the Crusaders took a 35-21 lead into the locker room. "We were getting two, three, four opportunities," said Pflug, whose team grabbed 20 offensive rebounds. "Brian Staver gave us a good spark in that first quarter." The defensive hero of the game was Thatcher Jones, a 5-foot-11 junior, who drew the assignment of guarding Gilchrists Brad Haynes, who entered with a 20-plus scoring average. Haynes finished the night with 12 points. "Hes one of those kids that goes almost unnoticed," Pflug said. "Hes very tenacious. I knew tonight he wanted to guard Brad Haynes and see how well he handled to pressure. I was very pleased." Fiddler finished with 11 rebounds and Murphy had 10. Derek Philips had five steals and Jones dished out four assists. "Our defense has really been starting to pick up," Pflug said. "Weve held opponents in the 20s and 30 and tonight we held a team that has been averaging 60 to 70 points to 43." GILCHRIST (40) Ernst 11, Crescenzi 0, Ke. Wirtz 0, Ky.
