ANNIVERSARY Anniversary: Mastain Richard and Mary Mastain celebrate 65 years together Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 23, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Nov. 23, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News Richard and Mary Mastain of Ashland celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Aug. 29, 2014. Richard Mastain married Mary Steele Aug. 29, 1949. They have four children: Rick of Park City, Utah; Carey of Sacramento, Calif.; Julian of Sonoma, Calif.; and Mardi of Ashland; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Dick and Mary graduated from Whittier College in Whittier, Calif., and married shortly after graduation. The couple worked a combined 65 years as teachers and administrators in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Nigeria. Dick received a doctorate in education from USC in 1964, and Mary earned a master's from California State University Sacramento in 1980. Mary taught in the primary grades for seven years, and was a reading specialist for 18 years. Dick served as an elementary and middle school teacher, a principal, a curriculum director, worked at Yale University trying to improve New Haven, Conn. public schools, and finished with 16 years with the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing as consultant, chief of programs, chief of licensing, and from 1985-1989, as executive director. In 1985, they and their four children lived for two interesting and different years in Enugu, Nigeria, where Dick was hired by UCLA to be education consultant for 200 Peace Corps volunteers. In 1989, the couple bough a house on Granite Street in Ashland, and moved there in 1993. Dick enjoys croquet, belonging to a book club, and he and his wife are active members of the First United Methodist Church. Mary volunteers at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, belongs to PEO and attends their fortnightly study club. Their four children and their families have planned a 65th anniversary celebration for June 2015 in Portland.
