The 60-person team swept in on two homes in Cave Junction and one in Wolf Creek at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Josephine County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Ken Selig said in a press release. Investigators found a 50-foot-by-50-foot underground growing site with 3,500 marijuana plants at a home in the 1600 block of Reeves Creek Road, Cave Junction. At the same address, they also found a three-level underground growing facility being built. When complete, that facility could have grown between 5,000 and 7,000 plants, investigators estimated. In the 5500 block of Westside Road, Cave Junction, investigators found a small underground growing site with about 50 marijuana plants, Selig said. In Wolf Creek, in the 4200 block of Coyote Creek Road, investigators found some marijuana and collected evidence, he said. Josephine Interagency Narcotics Team (JOINT) detectives spent two years gathering information about underground marijuana-growing sites in Josephine County, Selig said. Thursday, they gathered a team that included narcotics-enforcement teams from throughout the area, Oregon State Police, Grants Pass police, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Oregon Department of Justice, U.S. Forest Service and Oregon National Guard and Air National Guard. Advertisement Investigators believe the seized drugs were destined for an organized-crime distribution network in California, Selig said. Rex Denham, 26, who lives at the Reeves Creek Road address, and Freddie Tamayo, 34, of the Westside Road address, have state-issued medical marijuana cards. The program permits patients to have three mature marijuana plants, four immature plants and one ounce of dried marijuana per mature plant for medical use. Officers made no arrests and the investigation is continuing.
