Coordinators for Friday's "Hot August Night" are spending the week gathering unwanted animals from facilities that are out of space and unable to offer a no-kill policy like the Humane Society's. "We've decided to stay open late and have a kind of 'let's make a deal' adoption night," said Babette Carvalho, society general manager. "We're going to make it a fun event and stay open for people that usually can't come see us during the day. We have an overabundance of animals who need homes and our goal is to get everyone adopted." The Humane Society will stay open until 10 p.m. with all necessary staff and paperwork on hand to complete the adoption process. "So they could essentially take their new pet home that night," Carvalho said. The adopt-a-thon, which will feature a staff hula hoop contest and other activities, could make a difference for dogs such as Beck, a 5-year-old Australian shepherd male who's not crazy about living in a kennel but is lovable and enjoys being outside when he gets the chance, Carvalho said. "He's a great dog, if somebody would give him the time of day," Carvalho said. Two other tough-to-place pooches include Bree, a large-size rottweiler mix with lots of playful energy, and Zoey, a pit bull left over from a batch of pets rescued after Hurricane Katrina. Shelter volunteer Norm Gustafson said he challenges anyone to find a kinder dog than Zoey. "Zoey's the sweetest thing on the planet," he said, "but they've (pit bulls) got a bad reputation so here she sits." A few dozen new arrivals from about a half-dozen facilities include litters of boxer and Rhodesian ridgeback puppies, a 3-year-old retriever female named Trixie and a pair of basset hounds dubbed Peter and Piper. Others include a Great Dane-hound combo known as Duncan and a terrier mix listed as Spun-For-Fun — "Must tell us a little bit about that little fellow," Carvalho said. Dogs and cats will be picked up through the week from shelters in Jackson, Josephine and Curry counties, Coos Bay, Alturas, Prineville, Bend, Redmond and Roseburg. All pets adopted at the Humane Society come with micro-chipping, vaccinations, one month of free pet insurance, a complimentary vet visit and training session and a bag of supplies and information. In addition, dogs adopted during the event will receive a free Lupine collar and cats will receive a goody basket. Adoption fees start at $40. For details, contact the facility at 779-3215.
