Cavemen club Pelicans, 48-6 GRANTS PASS -- Grants Pass shut down the Southern Oregon Conference's leading rusher Danny King in a 48-6 season-finale that clinched a three-way tie for second -place in the league. "Our kids played well for the last game of the season," Grants Pass assistant coach Marty Zottola said. "Our backs ran real hard and our defense did a great job." Zottola said the Cavemen kept the Pelicans from breaking any long runs. "If we can't go to the playoffs," Zottola said, "This is a good way to end the season." The Cavemen were notified in the locker room after the game that they would be sitting out the postseason as North Medford and Roseburg earned the No. 2 and 3 berths from the SOC during a coin toss held earlier in the week. This was the first time since 1984 that four teams from the SOC were not allowed state playoff berths. Only three teams were taken this year due to the league's numbers dropping back to nine teams, with Mazama dropping to the Class 3A Skyline Conference. The Cavemen were led by Chuck Martin, who carried the ball 11 times for 72 yards. The team finished with 250 rushing yards on 39 carries. King carried the ball 29 times but could only muster 84 yards, while the Pelicans compiled an offensive effort of 139 yards. ROSEBURG 30, WILLAMETTE 6 -- At Eugene, Paul Bodenhamer rushed for three touchdowns and 100 yards as Roseburg ended the regular season with a non-conference victory. The Indians (6-2, 5-2 SOC) finished in a three-way tie for second in the SOC, but only two teams were eligible for the state playoffs. Roseburg received the SOC No. 3 playoff berth after a coin flip and will open postseason play Friday at Gresham. Indians sophomore running back Conway Bixby had a big night with a game-high 152 yards rushing. Roseburg led only 3-0 at halftime, but Bodenhamer had a 12-yard touchdown and Kevin Linderman broke a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Bodenhamer added two more fourth-quarter touchdowns to give Roseburg a 30-0 lead. MT. VIEW 27, SOUTH MEDFORD 6 -- At Bend, South Medford has been a good second-half team, but the Panthers couldn't dig itself out of an early deficit in a season-ending non-conference loss. Quarterback Taylor Drew ran for one touchdown and passed for another for the Intermountain Conference state playoff team. "We started out a little slow," South Medford coach Bill Singler said. "We didn't seem to have the energy to get off to a good start." Singler estimated South had about 300 yards in total offense, with about 250 coming through the air. "We didn't get in the end zone a couple of times when we had the opportunity," said Singler. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1998, Medford,
