Watch the skies By BILL KETTLER Mail Tribune If you’re traveling south today to enjoy Thanksgiving, you might save some time by starting a little later than you’d planned. Forecasters were expecting snow showers on Interstate 5 at Siskiyou Summit this morning, but skies should clear later in the day. "Early in the day we might see some problems going over the pass," said Chuck Glaser of the National Weather Service station in Medford. "As the day goes on it gets better and better." Glaser said northbound drivers should encounter nothing worse than wet pavement. Cloudy skies and no rain were expected Thursday, but driving conditions could be wet again by Friday. Snow seems highly unlikely — forecasters were expecting snow levels to rise well above pass levels by the end of the week. Advertisement If you want to mount a set of snow tires before you leave town, there’s still time, but call your favorite tire store before you show up to get a sense of how long you may have to wait. An informal survey of several tire stores on Tuesday found that some did not have all tire sizes in stock. Highway travelers will pay about 20 cents per gallon more for gas in Oregon than they did a year ago. Oregon gasoline prices on average are the sixth highest in the United States at $1.65 per gallon, according to data collected by AAA. In California, the average price is $1.72 per gallon; in Nevada, it's $1.71; in Idaho, $1.64; and in Washington, $1.60. Travelers flying out of the Medford airport should plan to arrive 1½ to 2 hours before departure to allow ample time to complete pre-flight security checks, said Kim Stearns, a spokeswoman for the Medford airport. Stearns noted that people who haven’t traveled since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, will discover that many things have changed. Security regulations, for example, prohibit travelers from carrying any wrapped packages. Liquor in quantities of more than 16 ounces will be confiscated as a hazardous material. Medicines must be carried in their original bottles, not in weekly one-day-at-a-time pill boxes. Stearns said the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest flying day of the year, but regular air travelers may not notice exceptional crowds in Medford because local flights have been flying at 85 to 90 percent of capacity for the past month or so. Stearns said fog has not been a problem so far this winter. Rainy weather tends to "wash" fog out of the sky.
