College students rescued from river GOLD HILL � It took 50 rescuers nearly five hours, but nine college students stranded late Saturday on a rock in the Rogue River near here all came away unscathed. The young people � students at Oregon State University and the University of Oregon � were in a raft that capsized at about 7 p.m. Saturday near the entrance to Powerhouse Rapids, according to Rod Edwards, battalian chief for Jackson County Fire District 3. The students were stranded at a dangerous location � on a rock midstream in swift water. Rescue teams from fire districts 3 and 4, Mercy Flights, the Medford Fire Department, Jackson County Search and Rescue and the Jackson County Sheriff�s Department assisted in the rescue, which concluded at about 11:20 p.m. The students were taken by rescue boats to the landing at the Gold Hill sports park for medical evaluation. They all were wearing life jackets. No one was injured. Names of the students were not available from law enforcement agencies.
