Taylor 1-1 in mat national PITTSBURGH -- Ian Taylor of South Medford High split a pair of matches during the first day of the National Senior High School Wrestling Tournament Friday. Taylor, the Class 4A 215-pound state champion for the Panthers this year, dropped down to 189 pounds for the three-day event. To be eligible for the tournament, a wrestler had to be a finalist in his state meet. There are 767 competitors from 47 states at the tournament. Taylor, 18, opened with a pin in 23 seconds against Scott Brady of Wyoming. Taylor avoided an early rush by Brady and capitalized by immediately throwing and pinning the Wyoming wrestler. Taylor lost a 19-6 decision in the second round to three-time Illinois state champion Russ McCallister. Taylor will compete in the consolation bracket today in the double-elimination tournament.
