The man, 26-year-old Cory Moleski, is homeless and camps along the river, said Donna Smith of Grants Pass. Smith said she saw the kayak and paddle float by at Riverside Park between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Sunday, but no sign of Moleski. The orange kayak was recovered later that morning from the north bank off River Oaks Place, about a half-mile downstream from Caveman Bridge. Cory Krauss with Josephine County Search and Rescue said Monday that six volunteers searched along the river until dark Sunday, and eight more went Monday with Josephine County Marine Deputy Ernie Fields, Brad Bennett of the Oregon State Police and a Jackson County marine deputy. Police logs indicate Moleski got in the kayak at 7:45 a.m. at Tom Pearce Park two miles upstream of Grants Pass. Police talked to friends of his who said he did the same float Saturday. The Rogue was running at over 7 feet and over 10,000 cubic feet per second Sunday in Grants Pass, about twice the average winter flow and dangerous to be floating in. Moleski had a life jacket but it was unclear whether he was wearing it or just had it in the kayak, according to Smith and to police logs. Smith said Moleski and others were living in a transient camp, and police logs indicate it's near Tom Pearce Park. Smith said she talked to Moleski and his friends a week ago at Riverside Park, and they were taking turns "playing in the kayak."
