RVTD officials described the Emergency Ride Home program as a way for employees who take the bus, ride in a carpool, bike or walk to work to get home quickly if necessary. Employees of businesses signed up at no charge can get vouchers for four free taxi rides home a year. Each voucher covers 30 metered miles, with the rider responsible for any remaining balance. "If they experience a family emergency, they'll be able to print a voucher and use it as an emergency taxi ride," said Transportation Demand Management planner Edem Gomez. The program, which is expected to operate for about $1,000 a year, is paid for through Oregon Department of Transportation grant funds. Agency officials say the program is part of Transportation Options, created to encourage optional methods of transportation besides cars. Reduced traffic congestion, better health, decreased carbon emissions and decreased traffic congestion are among Transportation Options' goals. Program officials say a key reason many drivers opt for a car is the flexibility they have in case they need to get home for an emergency. "They want that kind of security of having a car just in case something happens," Gomez said. Interested employers can call Gomez at 541-608-2411 or email [email protected].
