GOLF Loeb ousts defending champ Levis in extras Former SOGC champion faces Cook in today's final By Kris Henry Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 31, 2014 @ 8:27 pm By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 31, 2014 @ 8:27 pm » Social News The range of emotions were simply too much for Kelly Loeb to hold back as the sun began to set Sunday at Rogue Valley Country Club. After building a five-hole advantage on defending women’s champion Terry Levis through nine holes of their semifinal round at the 85th annual Southern Oregon Golf Championships, Loeb found her match all square through 17 holes. The Tucson, Ariz., resident then had to counter a dramatic 10-foot putt by Levis on the 18th with a knee-knocker of her own to simply keep playing. So when Levis left the door open when her putt on the 19th hole just missed its mark, Loeb couldn’t contain her delight and let out a scream when her match-winning 5-footer curled in to put her into today’s championship finals. “It was a tough match,” said Loeb, who won SOGC women’s titles in 2010 and ’11. “Terry’s a great player and I’ve got a friendship with her that has grown over the last three years since we met here at the Southern Oregon.” “It was a grind,” added Loeb. “The inside nine is such a tough nine so I’m really tickled pink that I was able to pull it out on this (19th hole).” Loeb’s opponent in today’s final will be Rosie Cook, who steadily kept former champion Trina Jones at bay and eventually won 2 up. Cook and Loeb met in last year’s quarterfinals, with Cook scorching the course to score a 7-and-6 victory. “It’s one shot at a time, I’m looking forward to it,” said Loeb. The 36-hole women’s championship flight matchup will begin with 18 holes at 9:20 a.m., then return for a second 18 holes, if necessary, at 3 p.m. In other women’s championship flight action Sunday, LaVone Kirkwood beat Alice Hunt (5 and 4) to set up a finals match with Deb Stuart, who won 2 up over Allison Myers. Their 18-hole final will begin at 2:30 p.m. today. Levis really began to dial it in on the final nine holes to put a charge into hopes of reaching today’s final. She won hole Nos. 12-14 to build some momentum and, after the golfers halved the 15th hole, Levis kept charging with wins on the 16th and 17th holes to suddenly find herself all square with one hole to go. On the 18th, Levis was a little cautious on her chip from off the edge of the green and left herself a little work to do as Loeb sat safely on the green about 15 feet from the hole. Loeb’s aggressive attempt to win it outright sent the ball about 2 feet past the cup to leave the door open for Levis, who beautifully rolled in her putt to put the pressure back on Loeb, who answered. On the first extra hole, No. 1, Loeb put her husband, Gary, on the bag after he had joined the match in progress following his own match. “I really feel bad because I fired my caddie after 18 holes and asked my sweetheart to come on my bag for me,” Loeb said. "I was nervous, there’s no doubt about it. He just makes me feel so secure and it’s what I needed. He had the read on (the winning putt), and it was just inside the right edge and drained.” “It was a very hard last nine holes,” she added. “Terry played great and I just struggled so it was a big relief there at the end.” WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT Kelly Loeb d.
