PROSPECT — Replacing a first-team all-league player like Darren Stillwagon is a tall order, yet Prospect’s Roo Driskell possesses all the physical tools and experience to fill the cleats of last season's fleet-footed star quarterback. Driskell, an all-Mountain Valley Leaguer in his own right as a wide receiver, was the team’s top target a year ago and was outstanding as a defensive back. Despite being a primary weapon for the offense, the void at quarterback left by Stillwagon’s graduation had to be addressed. The most sensible solution for Cougars coach David Boekenoogen was to call on Driskell. “I think Roo is going to step in and do a good job,” said Boekenoogen. “He’s the most experienced, athletic kid. He’s really fast and has a good sense of where to put the ball when it’s in his hands.” While Driskell’s move to quarterback will most likely be the catalyst for the Cougars, who are coming off their first winning season and league playoff game since 2005, the revolving door has been active at other skill positions. Boekenoogen said he’s excited about Devin Sheile, who missed his entire junior campaign following a motorcycle accident, which left him with a broken femur and other injuries. While he has never been a starter and despite his injuries, Sheile brings speed and quickness at slot receiver and as a safety on defense. “He’s an up-and-coming guy that we’re gonna get some good things from,” said Boekenoogen. Junior Jared Gaines and senior Wade May will give the Cougars some punch on both sides of the ball as wide receivers and cornerbacks, while the squad’s offensive and defensive lines will be anchored by a consistent starter from a year ago, junior Cole Hunsley. Spencer Scofield, who played for rival Butte Falls a year ago, transferred to Prospect and will make an impact as the team’s primary running back to fill the hole left by the graduated Will Hatley. Scofield will also play middle linebacker. Another transfer expected to have a an impact is Travis Bonney from Eagle Point. His role hasn’t hadn’t been determined in preseason camp, but he’ll have one. “He’s a speed guy who will get up to speed by the time we hit league. I expect him to get in the mix,” said Boekenoogen. The Cougars will rely on their speed to offset a lack of size. “All of the teams have one or two guys that can run really well, but we will have four or five,” said Boekenoogen. “We’ll try to find those mismatches and do the best job we can to create lanes and angles and put the ball in our athletes’ hands and get some things done. “We have several guys who are new or inexperienced. As a whole, we’re not real big but we’re very fast. We’re just gonna take advantage of our speed and do the best we can and see where that falls."
