Barber was carried through the outside fence on the backstretch of the track after Aglo Pilgrim had trouble negotiating the first turn in the ninth race. The 8-year-old thoroughbred went out of control, through a gate and slid underneath a pickup truck Barber sustained a slight concussion and had five stitches on her forehead. "She’ll be off for a couple of weeks," said Al Westhoff, GP Downs director of racing. "She loves the horse. She’s rode the horse plenty of times." Aglo Pilgrim, owned by George Hurliman of Tillamook, was fine and is expected to race here again this season. Jean Rodgers, who was sitting on the tailgate of the pickup truck, broke both legs during the incident. Rodgers is a member of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Posse. She’s positioned near the track to open and close the draw gate, which allows horses to get back and forth to the track and stalls between races. Two other track accidents also occurred on the weekend. In Saturday’s first race, defending leading jockey Bobby Webb broke an arm when first-time starter Lil’bitcrazy acted up after crossing the finish line third. When the horse knocked up against the inside rail, Webb was caught by surprise and got kicked in the arm after jumping off the horse. Webb is lost for the season after undergoing surgery. In Sunday’s fifth race, the 2-year-old quarterhorse ASA Garrett snapped a leg during the 350-yard sprint and had to be destroyed. Through the first two weekends of racing, the track has averaged $56,555 in pari-mutuel handle. The Sunday over the Memorial Day weekend brought the biggest crowd (1,749) and largest handle ($66,583) of the meet. Racing takes place Saturday and Sunday this weekend with a nine-race card beginning at 1 p.m. each day. GP Downs is located at the Josephine County Fairgrounds on Redwood Avenue just off Highway 199.
