Klamath Union boys fare well at cross country meet YREKA, Calif. - Jacob Gomez and Lauren Jespersen went 1-2 at the Premier West Cross Country Invitational to lead the Klamath Union High boys to the team championship. Gomez, who won the 3,000 meters at the Class 4A state track meet last spring, covered the 4,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 52 seconds to beat Jespersen by five seconds. South Medford's Shaun Olson finished a distant third in 16:19. Kevin Pellegrino chipped in a seventh-place effort for the Pelicans in 16:59 and Alex Jayne was 10th in 17:23. Klamath Union finished with 70 points, while Grants Pass was second with 94 and Ashland third with 122. On the girls side, Yreka won the team title with 75 points. Klamath Union was second with 85 and Ashland third with 98. Kelly Ortlieb of Foothill, Calif., took individual honors as she covered the 4,000-meter course in 15:33. Klamath Union's Katie Leary was second in 15:44 and Ashland's Kendall Clark third in 15:46. Leah Sawyer of St. Mary's finished seventh at 16:23. Volleyball ROSEBURG WINS OWN TOURNEY - At Roseburg, the Indians went undefeated in winning the nine-team Roseburg Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Roseburg swept Sprague and Marshfield in pool play, then topped Marshfield again in the semifinals before capping the Indians' run with a 15-6, 15-3 win over South Eugene in the finals. Shannon Burmeister posted 32 kills and 12 acces for Roseburg in the tourney, while Taylor Jones and Katie Kahn each had 28 kills. Mary Patricia Junkin added 88 assists for the Indians. Grants Pass advanced to the third-place match before losing to Marshfield, 5-15, 10-15. Senior outside hitter Ally Codington, setter Apryl Allen and right-side hitter Kathy Richards led the attack for Grants Pass. Crater split its matches in pool play, topping North Salem (15-5, 15-17, 15-10) but falling shy to South Eugene (15-9, 12-15, 15-12). Marshfield ended the Comets' run in the quarterfinals witha 15-9, 6-15, 15-10 triumph. GLENDALE INVITATIONAL - At Glendale, Cascade Christian lost to Elkton, the 2000 Class 1A state champion, in pool play but came back to defeat the Elks in the championship of the eight-team tournament. The Challengers won the title match 15-9 and 15-12. Cascade had to come back from an 11-3 deficit in the second game. Junior Janee Johnson helped the Challengers rally with seven service points in the game, including the final four. Kristin Salamone provided four kills and Whitney Brookins 46 assists in the championship. Cascade edged Glendale in the semifinals 13-15, 15-8 and 17-16. Challenger seniors Krystle Holtz and Amy Roseberg provided strong all-around play and good leadership in the tournament. Butte Falls finished third in the opposite pool from Cascade, but lost to the Challengers 15-5 and 15-6 in the opening round of bracket play. In pool action, the Loggers defeated Umpqua Valley Christian, split with Glendale and lost two to Bonanza. OAKRIDGE INVITATIONAL - At Oakridge, three-time defending tournament champion St. Mary's finished third in the 10-team event. The Crusaders placed second in their five-school pool with a 3-1 record. St. Mary's only loss was to Monroe, 15-10. In the four-team championship play, the Crusaders dropped a 15-7 decision in the semifinals to the other pool winner Santiam Christian. The defense-minded Crusaders received big efforts from junior Kristina Easton (18 digs) and sophomore Kathryn Zielony (16 digs). Junior outside hitter Libby Trum had an effective all-around game for the Crusaders with 12 digs and a team-high 19 kills. St. Mary's junior setter Melissa Anderson provided 41 assists.
