He was not seriously injured, police said. Oregon State Police Sgt. Matt Bowersox said in a news release that Jack E. Taylor, 54, of Coos Bay, lost control of his logging truck at about 9 a.m. Monday at milepost 45, just east of the Douglas/Coos county line. The truck rolled, spilling logs onto the highway. The truck was registered to Youngs Trucking, Bowersox said. A 2005 Kenworth tractor and box trailer registered to Fed Ex that was traveling westbound swerved to avoid the log truck, jackknifing the trailer across both lanes of the highway. The driver, James D. Metcalf, 39, of Winchester, was unharmed. A 2010 Ford Ranger driven by Braden J. Giberson, 19, of Roseburg, was following the Fed Ex truck when it jackknifed. Giberson drove into a ditch to avoid the crash and the load of logs landed on his Ranger. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg for what police described as minor injuries. The highway was blocked for several hours as crews removed the vehicles and logs.
