Steyskal, who has lived in Talent since 1988, said he wasn't planning on running for re-election — or for mayor for that matter. But when he saw only one other person had picked up a packet, Steyskal thought he would give it a shot. "I was thinking I'd sure like to have someone as a mayor who has some idea of what's going on," Steyskal said. Steve Traisman, organizer of World Peace and Prayer Day in Ashland, is the only other potential candidate so far. Traisman and Steyskal have yet to turn in the 20 signatures necessary to run for mayor, City Manager Betty Wheeler said. Steyskal works for Norton Lumber in White City. He said his main goal in running for mayor is to keep the momentum going that started with Marian Telerski, who has decided not to run again. "Right now I'm looking at keeping it on track," Steyskal said. "The last 10 years, we've been improving the efficiency of government." Steyskal said he is a proponent of infill and likes having a buffer between Talent and Ashland and Phoenix. He also supports a bond measure for a new police station in Talent. "I'm not a big-time politician," Steyskal said. "I just think the mayor should have some city government experience."
