Jack Cornett, 72, was fatally injured in the crash, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. when his Toyota Prius was struck almost head-on near Allen Creek Road by a Ford F-150 pickup truck, authorities said. According to Deputy Chief Jim Hamilton of the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, Cornett died after being rushed to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center. The driver of a pickup, 31-year-old Jacob Zainfeld, who lives in a rural area west of Grants Pass, was transferred to a Portland hospital after being taken to Three Rivers, Hamilton said. The crash near the center of the highway crushed the front ends of both vehicles. The Department of Public Safety said in a news release that Zainfeld was pulled out of his burning truck with the help of a bystander. Cornett had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life tool. Witnesses on the scene said Zainfeld suffered a broken leg. Police on the scene were busy reconstructing the accident, which took place about 300 yards west of the highway's intersection with Allen Creek Road. They were back this morning continuing the investigation. Jackson Luckin was working at the nearby Dutch Bros. stand in the Allen Creek Shopping Center and heard the loud crash. He saw the aftermath, as paramedics and firefighters had to pull both victims out. "We heard a big boom, and smoke was everywhere," Luckin said. The crash badly snarled traffic on the south side of Grants Pass, bringing the afternoon commute to a near standstill for many motorists. Traffic backed up all the way to the Grants Pass Parkway past the South Y interchange. Traffic also backed up on Sixth Street as far as E Street, and M Street was clogged between Seventh Street and the Grants Pass Parkway. Detectives are investigating and want to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash. Witnesses are asked to contact Detective Archie Lidey at 541-450-6260.
