A resident of a downstairs apartment left a candle burning unattended on a bathroom counter at the Anjou Club apartments at 100 N. Pacific Highway, said Darin Welburn, division chief for Fire District No. 5. The candle apparently was allowed to burn for several hours, eventually beginning to burn the counter on which it rested. "It burned the counter black and would have started a large fire if it continued," Welburn said. "It was at a point where it was starting to take off and spread." Heavy smoke caused the apartment’s smoke detector to sound at about 11:30 p.m. Monday night. Neighbors heard the alarm and called 9-1-1, Welburn said. Firefighters arrived shortly after and were able to contain the fire to the apartment’s bathroom. Damage was estimated at several thousand dollars. "The smoke detector potentially averted a tragedy," Welburn said. "It was late at night and it was a downstairs apartment, so a fire could have spread quickly and trapped people upstairs who might have been sleeping." Welburn said candles should never be left burning unattended and they should always be in a candle holder.
