Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Chase ends in Medford man’s arrest By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune A Medford man was jailed Friday after leading police on a wild chase that started near the Rogue Valley Mall, continued south along Interstate 5 and ended in a Pizza Hut parking lot on Riverside Avenue, authorities said. Jacob Stephen Gadberry, 21, faces charges of driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, eluding police while in a vehicle, eluding police on foot and hit-and-run driving in connection with the dangerous pursuit. Gadberry could still face more charges, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. Gadberry, also arrested on a probation violation, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail without bail. At about 12:45 p.m., Medford police Detective Justin Ivens and Jackson County sheriff’s Detective Colin Fagan were in the area of Table Rock Road and Highway 99 when they noticed a sport- utility vehicle driven by Gadberry, whom they knew was driving without a license, Moran said. When Gadberry spotted the detectives following him, he got on I-5 at the north Medford interchange and headed south. Fagan said Gadberry tried to elude them by driving along the shoulder of I-5, but became hung up in traffic and exited onto Barnett Road, where the chase continued. Advertisement Gadberry cut through a parking lot near a Subway sandwich shop at the corner of Barnett and Riverside Avenue and drove along a sidewalk before stopping the rented SUV and fleeing on foot, Moran said. Gadberry ran through a Pizza Hut on South Riverside and hid underneath a vehicle in the parking lot. When police found him, Gadberry tried to run away but was taken into custody after officers used pepper spray to subdue him, Moran said. "The suspect, at that point, put up no further resistance," Moran said. Meanwhile, Gadberry’s rented vehicle rolled forward into traffic and slammed into a car headed north on Riverside Avenue that was occupied by a woman and a small child, Moran said. They were not injured. Police later searched the SUV and found a number of items that may have been stolen, Moran said. "We located a large amount of retail goods that we believe could be part of a crime," he said. "We’ve seized that property." Items found in the vehicle included electronic equipment and clothing, Moran said.
