Police chased 39-year-old Gregorio Caldera Ruvalcaba for 78 miles, ending in south Medford. By journey's end, the 2012 Dodge pickup he drove had been spiked multiple times and was driving on shredded tires, with its wheels showering the freeway with sparks. Ruvalcaba's vehicular antics closed southbound I-5 near exit 27 for about 10 minutes and had southbound traffic limited to a single lane for about 30 minutes after that. Ruvalcaba's speed reached triple digits several times during the chase. "The speeds reached 115 (mph) at certain points," Myrtle Creek police officer Kevin Taggart said. Taggart said the truck was spotted near milepost 105 on I-5 at 5:15 a.m. Monday. Police tried to pull the truck over for speeding, but Ruvalcaba sped away. Myrtle Creek officers followed, with Oregon State Police taking over the pursuit at the Josephine County line, Taggart said. The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety deployed spike strips — designed to disable vehicles by deflating their tires — near the Grants Pass city limits, but the pickup drove on. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department joined the chase near milepost 43, according to Sgt. Rick Kennedy. Central Point police laid down more spike strips close to milepost 35. "Then the vehicle started sparking heavily," Kennedy said. "Speeds started slowing down by the viaduct." An OSP vehicle was accidentally spiked, terminating its pursuit, he added. By that point, the damaged tires on the truck were mostly gone, police said. The truck finally came to a rest near exit 27 in the fast lane. Ruvalcaba was arrested just after 6 a.m. Both southbound lanes of I-5 were closed for about 10 minutes before the slow lane reopened. Both lanes were back open by 7 a.m, officials said.
