Layoffs announced Wednesday complete cuts that began sporadically throughout the company in July, according to Erickson spokeswoman Susan Bladholm. While the company has eliminated about 100 positions, Bladholm said, not all were layoffs. Some jobs cut were seasonal positions and contract positions that were not renewed. “Others were people who left on their own and we have not refilled them,” Bladholm said. Bladholm said she didn't know how many jobs in Southern Oregon were eliminated, saying the company looked at the type of work performed rather than staff's location in determining the cutbacks. The layoffs were across the board, but the largest percentage came from the leadership ranks, according to Bladholm. "It's more by operating units," Bladhlom said. As of Aug. 1, the company had 750 employees around the world, Bladholm said, including 300 in Central Point and 50 at the company's Portland headquarters. The company has operations in India, Latin America, Canada and Australia. Bladholm confirmed the layoffs are a consequence of continued losses by the company. On Aug. 15, the company posted $29.3 million in losses for the second quarter of the year, according to the Erickson website. “There’s no doubt that we need to scale the business in order to operate it profitably,” Bladholm said. In the first quarter the company lost $26 million, and it posted annual losses of $10.2 million in 2014 and $86.7 million in 2015, according to articles in the Mail Tribune archives. Previous reports show the company has struggled with long-term debt, totaling about $372 million. Earlier this month, Wells Fargo threatened to charge Erickson a $3.5 million fee if it doesn't repay a $140 million credit line by the end of August, according to a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "It's important we take this necessary step now in order to maintain that our remaining employees can stay here long-term with the company," Bladholm said.
