Back then it was David Letterman (aka Chet Dabkowski) at the Plymouth, Massachusetts, transfer station and later the weight room at my local gym. But Chet was by no means the only celebrity lookalike I’ve run across in recent years. Alden Park bar manager Brian Benson is still a Tom Brady ringer, and I’ve recently spied Brendan Fraser on the ab crunch bench at the gym (seems a lot of celebrity lookalikes work out like, well celebrities). But what really inspired me to revisit this topic was the Bob Newhart doppelganger refereeing the national championship college football game between the Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes on Monday night. With the very first penalty called in the game I yelled over to my husband – who was working at the dining room table — “This guy looks exactly like Bob Newhart – you’ve got to see him.” This was nothing new to my spouse, who is accustomed to this little hobby of mine – finding folks who look like famous people. While the mister was no doubt wondering why I was focused on whom the ref resembled rather than the Oregon receivers’ ineffectiveness on third down, he humored me by tuning into the next false start penalty. Even he agreed the resemblance was uncanny. And it turns out I wasn’t alone in making that call. Bob Newhart was trending on social media during and after the game with the comedian himself weighing in with this tweet: “Hey, I don’t have a series any more – I had to do something.” See, I am good at this. The conversation continued at work where a colleague overheard my conversation and then pointed out that our new sports editor bears some similarity to Brit singer Ed Sheeran. I think I’d need him to strap on an acoustic guitar and hold a mic for full effect, but she’s probably on to something. Over the years there have been several co-workers who look like someone famous – in sports, music or television; including a former photographer who could easily be mistaken for South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier, an editorial assistant who channels Annie Lennox and a current photographer who reminds me of “Blacklists’” James Spader – my husband doesn’t see that one. Just about everybody knows somebody who looks like somebody famous. If you see stars too, snap a photo and email it to [email protected] along with a caption with their name, the town they live in and the celebrity you think they look like. Commence stargazing!
