Diamond delights highlight week By Greg Stiles Baseball fans can get their fill in a hurry during the next three days with tournaments going on in Medford and Ashland. The fifth-annual Asante Diamond Classic goes today and Wednesday in Medford. At 10:30 a.m. today, South Eugene is at North Medford, Corvallis at South Medford and Crescent Valley plays Oregon City at Miles Field. The remaining six games are scheduled later today and Wednesday at Miles Field. The Ashland Round-Robin Tournament makes its second appearance today through Thursday. Glencoe, Clackamas, Lake Oswego, Forest Grove, Wilsonville, Roosevelt and Gladstone are in the valley for three games at North Mountain Park. Ashland plays Lake Oswego at noon today, Roosevelt at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Clackamas at p.m. on Thursday. All games will be played at North Mountain Park where the Grizzlies will play all of their home SOC games and Ashland High. "Originally, we were just going to have a four-team tournament, but somehow the fax machine broke and some teams responded and some more responded," Ashland coach Doug Stover says. "Weve got two more on the waiting list now." THE 2001 EDITION of the National High School Sports Record Book is out. There were no new entries from Oregon, but James Kilian of Medford Oklahoma that is went wild in the eight-man football category, setting five records. Kilian was a sophomore the year Powers High flew down to Oklahoma for an 8-man intersectional game at Medford. Powers won that game 18-14 and was in the midst of a run of three state championships, ending in 1998. Kilian went on to score 165 touchdowns, throw for another 120, tallied 11,049 yards in total offense and completed 434 passes for 8,426 yards all national career records. THE VIEW IS DIFFERENT says former North Medford softball coach Larry Binney. Binney is directing the North Medford Invitational tournament that concludes today at Fagone and Jackson fields. "For the last 19 years Ive been watching the game from the field instead of the stands or press box," Binney says. "Its different, but its been O.K." Binney is wrapping up his teaching career at Hedrick Middle School this spring. "Ive watched the kids play four games and the jamboree," he says. "Im doing some scouting, but thats about all. Its best that way." THE CLASS 4A BASEBALL and softball playoffs get under way May 18. The No. 4 Southern Oregon Conference baseball team gets a home game against a Pac-9 team. The No. 4 SOC softball team goes on the road to play at the No. 4 Mount Hood school. Both SOC champs host play-in round opponents on May 22. That same day, the SOCs No. 3 baseball team plays at the Midwestern League champion, while the Pac-9 No. 3 squad is at the SOC runner-up. In softball, the SOC runner-up entertains the Pac-9 runner-up, while the No. 3 SOC team travels to the Three Rivers League runner-up.
