The utility’s plant manager, Andy Gentry, determined that 18 of the arborvitaes are dead or dying because of infestation of insects boring through the bark. Pacific Power spokesman Monte Mendenhall says that the trees will soon be removed along with blackberries and brush and replaced when the weather cools. The makeover of the substation, one of eight serving Medford, starts with 150 cubic-yards of topsoil and 25 cubic-yards of crushed rock. Four types of vegetation will be added, including: 23 Leland Cypress trees, 60 Emerald Green Arborvitea, nine Photinia Fradesi bushes and two decorative Thundercloud Plums.
