SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY Book festival expected to draw regional authors Some 70 authors and publishers are expected to show their wares at Southern Oregon University’s third annual Ashland Book and Author Festival. By John Darling for the Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By John Darling for the Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 1, 2014 @ 5:37 pm By John Darling for the Mail Tribune Posted Sep. 1, 2014 @ 5:37 pm » Social News Some 70 authors and publishers are expected to show their wares at Southern Oregon University’s third annual Ashland Book and Author Festival, Saturday, Sept. 20, at Hannon Library.  It’s the first big project for Dr. Jeffrey T. Gayton, the new university librarian and director of the Learning Commons.  The increasingly popular author fest draws mostly from the Rogue Valley, but will have authors coming from Portland to Northern California, and is expected to draw 400 people, says Gayton. Among the authors are locals Ed Battistella with “Sorry About That: The Language of Public Apology;” Patty Wixon, Oregon Book Award winner; Barbara Tricarico with “Ashland, Oregon” photography book and Alan Armstrong and Mary Z. Maher with “Oregon Shakespeare Festival Actors: Telling the Story.” Over 60 percent of authors return from the previous year, says Gayton, “so it’s useful and valuable to them.” Gayton comes from University of Wisconsin library and replaced Paula Adalian at SOU in July.  Discussion panels will be: ”Crime and Chaos, a Mystery Writing Discussion” — with authors Donald L. Ball, Rosemary Dunn Dalton, and Michael Niemann.  ”It Takes a Village to Make a Book,” authors Alan Armstrong and Mary Maher, Jonah Bornstein of Wellstone Press and others discuss their various roles in creating the new book “Oregon Shakespeare Festival Actors: Telling the Story.”  ”Strange Worlds: Fantasy and Science Fiction,” with authors A. A. Radda, Leandra Martin, R. A. Finley, and Scott Crabtree.  “Writing Oregon’s History,” with authors Robert Arellano, Edwin Battistella and Diane Goeres-Gardner.  Workshops are: Reading Workshop: "10 Tricks to Unlock Kesey’s Best," with author and SOU professor Robert Arellano. Spiritual Memoirs Workshop, inspired writing with memoirist Ana Callan. Publishing with Amazon’s CreateSpace: self-publishing with Amy Miller. Collaborative Publishing: "The New Model for 21st Century Publishing," with Steve Scholl, founder of White Cloud Press.  Organizing Book Marketing Data — marketing strategies with Cheryl Colwell.  Self-Publishing: The Low-Down on High Quality, with Patricia with Patricia Marshall of Luminare Press.  The eight publishers include White Cloud Press of Ashland, Fuze Publishing of Ashland and Silverlining Press of Talent.  Other activities are:  Inside Oregon State Hospital, a short reading from Diane Goeres-Gardner.  Reading by Dorothy Vogel, from her mystery novel set in Cave Junction.  Poem reading by Steve Dieffenbacher, exploring Oregon’s past and present in the Summer Lake area.  Poetry contest by Rogue Valley Messenger, with winners reading.  The making of the book, “Ashland, Oregon” with photographer Barbara Tricarico.  Authors may register for $40 at http://hanlib.sou.edu/bookfest . The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free parking will be available. A Kids Corner will provide all-day crafts and activities for children ages 3 to 10.
