Da Capo Press, Boston, 2014. 400 pages. Paperback. $15.99. With summertime and Halloween now solidly behind us, we can tuck into one of our favorite topics — food. What better way to kick off the holiday cooking season than with this gem of an anthology, “Best Food Writing 2014”? Holly Hughes, who has been editing “Best Food Writing” for more than a decade, has done a remarkable job pulling together food-related writing from a myriad divergent sources. Though this is most definitely a book that can satisfy in small bites — like a box of good chocolates — it’s hard to stop at one piece. I consumed most of “Best Food Writing 2014” in a couple of days. No wonder I have to use the Livestrong calorie counting app. One of the best things about this collection is its diversity. There are the anchor stories, like the piece by New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik, “Bread and Women,” which could serve as a model for long-form journalism students and writers everywhere. Long in the wind-up, the story about Gopnik’s mother and his wife’s bread-making styles delivers a powerful and unexpectedly stunning culminating punch. His mother’s Renaissance woman heroics are both enviable and off-putting. But Gopnik’s back-to-basics wife puts the whole thing in perspective with her furious kneading and the comfort toast that follows. If you’ve wondered about the trend in $4 toast, John Gravois produces “A Toast Story” for Pacific Standard that is both funny and poignant. Long lines for toast started in a tiny cafe-like place by a bipolar woman working as much to provide sustenance as to manage her manic phases. Read “Five Things I Will Not Eat,” from CivilEats.com, only if you’re prepared to change your eating habits. Editor Hughes mined food blogs, websites and printed publications for this book. Barry Estabrook’s piece on the problems with salad greens in plastic bags and ground hamburger is important but depressing. Luckily, I have a salad spinner. “Last Meals” by Brent Cunningham and published in the excellent Lapham’s Quarterly is about condemned prisoners’ last meals. In Texas, due to budget cuts and attitude, prisoners about to be executed get what everyone else in prison gets that night, which isn’t much. And the food budget per prisoner per day is under $5 in any prison where the food service is outsourced. It’s a fascinating article about the inhumanity of prisons through the lens of food. Silas House writes an iconic piece about the way food can reconnect us with our loved ones, our childhood and our best memories in “The Indulgence of Pickled Baloney,” originally published in Gravy. In the mining town where he grew up, the small store where everyone shopped and ran a tab offered a big jar of pickled bologna, which could be purchased by the small piece. When moms had a few cents to spare, they would bring home a slab of this treat. “Waiting for the 8th,” also about hunger and deprivation, is taken from Eli Saslow’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work for the Washington Post about a family struggling to eat on a food stamp budget that keeps getting whittled down by Congress. When the food runs out the family gets up and gets in long food lines by 5 a.m. — all within easy view of Congress and the president. Sometimes all they get are a few hotdog rolls and some sweet potatoes, and for that they are grateful. The Back to Basics section of this book includes much to commend including “How to Cook a Turkey,” which everyone who is cooking a turkey this Thanksgiving should read. Molly Watson knows what she’s talking about, and I’m inclined to give her method a try. “Meals from a Hunter” by Steve Hoffman is an important piece about the value of hunting, which many families rely on to provide a sizeable part of their yearly food intake. My favorite piece in a big book of favorite pieces is Albert Burneko’s “How to Cook Chicken Cutlets.” He writes for a sports site called Deadspin, and this piece talks straight to his raucous-guy audience like they were sitting together in a room after having had a couple too many beers. If I do one thing this week, it will be to make these chicken cutlets a la Burneko. They sound delicious, and pounding the heck out of a chicken breast beats turning up the heat to get warm. With all the Nor’easters, the snow and the too-short days, what better way to spend the enforced downtime than by reading about food, cooking and then eating it?
