COLLEGE FOOTBALL UO's Addison returns from knee injury Comment By Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 4:08 PM By Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 4:08 PM » Social News EUGENE — The temptation was there. Bralon Addison had recovered from his torn ACL by the time Oregon was preparing for the inaugural College Football Playoff. The dynamic receiver and punt returner thought about playing in the Rose Bowl against Florida State, where he put on the pads for pregame warmups, and the national championship game against Ohio State, which Devon Allen (injury) and Darren Carrington (suspension) missed. “For a second,” Addison said of mulling a postseason return. “I may have been able to play, but I don’t think it would have been suitable for my heart. I don’t think I would have been able to play as fast as the offense plays.” Addison began the process of getting into football shape and on the same page with the quarterbacks on Tuesday during the first day of spring practice. After an honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection in 2013, Addison suffered his season-ending knee injury during spring practice last April. So instead of being the team’s most experienced returning target, the redshirt junior watched talented first-year receivers Allen, Carrington and Byron Marshall help Marcus Mariota win the Heisman Trophy. “You never know how much you miss practice until you can’t practice anymore,” Addison said after the first of Oregon’s 15 spring practices. “I had fun today.” Addison said he is at the point in his recovery where he doesn’t even think about the surgically repaired knee when making cuts or working out. “I’m passed that fear,” Addison said. “After a year of not running routes and not catching balls from quarterbacks, I think the biggest thing is getting that rust off and getting into the rhythm of coming out of your breaks and finding the ball.” Tyler Johnstone, who tore his ACL in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30, 2013, and again during fall camp last season, is also healthy enough to compete in practice again. No Carrington update Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said he doesn’t know how long Carrington will be suspended this season after failing a drug test before the national championship game. According to the NCAA, an athlete who tests positive for “street drugs” like marijuana is ineligible for a half-season. “We don’t have any clarity, no. That’s something that will be ongoing behind the scenes,” Helfrich said on Carrington’s status for the 2015 schedule. “If we do ever get clarity, we’ll probably announce that.” Seeing red Defensive end DeForest Buckner, running back Taj Griffin and offensive linemen Doug Brenner and Elijah George wore red jerseys on Tuesday, indicating they were not available for contact drills. Buckner was on crutches at pro day earlier this month with an apparent left knee injury. Griffin, a talented freshman, tore an ACL during his senior year of high school. Brenner is expected to be in the competition to replace all-American center Hroniss Grasu. George missed last season with an injury, but Helfrich has said the 6-5, 290-pounder could push veterans for their staring jobs if they rest on their laurels. One-time sneak peek Helfrich opened up the first 10 minutes of Tuesday’s practice to members of the media. Spring practices had been completely closed since April 2012 when Chip Kelly was coach. “Not a change in policy,” Helfrich said. “It was a start-of-the-spring kind of deal … Hopefully (photographers) got some good shots.” By Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 4:08 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football RBs Ready to Break Out on New Teams Apr. 2, 2015 at 10:21 am Who Will Be QB1s with New Teams in 2015?
