The former South Medford High standout was in his third season in Detroit, and for most of his time there, the Pistons were among the worst teams in the league. He’s now headed to an Oklahoma City team that lost in the Western Conference finals to eventual champion San Antonio last season and features superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Singler could not be reached Thursday, but his father, Ed, shared some of his son’s thoughts after they spoke on the phone. “He’s excited about the opportunity,” said Ed Singler, as he returned home from a Portland business trip with his wife, Kris. “But he’s sad, too. Kyle is a loyal person, and he felt like things were really turning around in Detroit, and he wanted to be a part of that and was excited about the opportunity to make the playoffs.” Detroit began the season 8-20, including losses in its first seven games. The Pistons, with Singler starting, have since gone 13-13 and are in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. “He’s sad not to be part of that, but he’s excited about what’s ahead of him,” said Ed Singler, who was in meetings much of the day and had to play catch-up on his son’s situation once his workday ended. “He doesn’t have a whole lot of answers, but he’s excited about the opportunity.” Oklahoma City defeated Dallas 104-89 Thursday night. Singler will join the Thunder for its next game in Charlotte Saturday. The Thunder traded Reggie Jackson to Detroit and acquired Enes Kanter from Utah in part of a three-team deal. Along with the 26-year-old Singler, Detroit sent guard DJ Augustin and a 2019 second-round draft selection to the Thunder, and the Pistons sent a 2017 second-round pick to the Jazz. Oklahoma City traded center Kendrick Perkins, forward Grant Jerrett, the draft rights to Tibor Pleiss and a protected 2017 first-round pick to Utah. Oklahoma City also acquired forward Steve Novak from the Jazz. When he learned of the trade, Singler put several messages on Twitter: "Now, it’s time to #ThunderUp! Excited. Ready. @okcthunder, lets get it." "To my Motor City brothers, keep the playoff dream alive. Good luck & see ya on the other side. - #25" "Thank you to the @DetroitPistons for a great 2.5 years. I appreciate it. - The Bucket Man" Singler started 150 of 218 career games for the Pistons after being selected in the second round of the 2011 draft out of Duke and playing a season in Spain. In nearly 24 minutes a game this season, he averaged 7.1 points, 1.2 assists and 2.6 rebounds. He’s shooting over 40 percent on 3-pointers and 80 percent on free throws despite playing recently with a broken nose that required him to wear a protected mask for four games. Singler’s inclusion in the deal was largely glossed over in initial news accounts. But there are indications he was a bigger piece of the puzzle than some realize. David Mayo, who covers the Pistons for mlive.com, analyzed Detroit’s moves and wrote: “The Pistons gave up four players and the one they didn't want to lose was Singler. They liked the idea of having Singler as a budget backup small forward in the $4-5 million range. As a player making about $1 million his first three seasons, Singler has been one of the best value starters in the NBA. At several times his current salary, and ideally in a backup role as the Pistons move to shore up their roster, Singler didn't have quite the same appeal. He was the piece the Pistons didn't want to give away. They had to do it to make the trade work.” The Thunder, meanwhile, has long been interested in Singler. “That’s the other exciting thing,” said Ed Singler. “They’re a team that was interested in Kyle from the very beginning. Kyle was on the board for them when he was being drafted.” Singler was projected to go to Oklahoma City with the 24th pick. Darnell Mayberry, in The Oklahoman in 2011, wrote that Singler to the Thunder seemed to be the most accurate draft projection for the franchise since it took Durant second overall in 2007. But, said Ed Singler, “something happened to push everything down, a European player coming on or something.” The Thunder drafted Jackson, and Singler went to Detroit nine picks later. Singler now is on a Thunder team with lots of potential and that is back in the playoff hunt after a slow start due to injuries to Durant and Westbrook. His parents are happy to see him in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference, where the Portland Trail Blazers currently rule. Those teams play each other four times a season. Their next meeting is next Friday in Portland. “Selfishly, we’re excited about that part,” said Ed Singler. He believes his son will adapt to new surroundings. “Change is always hard when it comes abruptly like this,” said Ed Singler, “but that’s the nature of that business.
