How often does that get repainted? — Sally D., Medford According to the Oregon Department of Transportation website at www.tripcheck.com , "lane-striping paint is ... a short-lived product." Newer thermoplastic products are on the market that have a lifespan of about 3 to 4 years. If that doesn't sound like a long time, keep in mind the paint is pummeled by rain, sun, snow, de-icing chemicals and sand, plus car and truck tires, as well as studs, chains and snowplows. According to Cory Crebbin, public works director for the city of Medford, city crews repaint lines once a year. High traffic areas, such as those near schools, can be repainted twice a year depending on how much wear and tear there has been. ODOT says it's responsible for about 19,000 lane miles of highways statewide and restripes about 13,000 lane miles each year, which works out to just over two-thirds of its lines being repainted annually. That's a lot of miles. And a lot of paint. Those miles include the solid center lines, dashed lines and white fog lines. With all of those lines, some highways have their paint redone rather frequently. So the next time you see those painting crews out there, give them a wide berth and a wave of thanks.
