Headwaters solicits writing for Klamath-Siskiyou book By PAUL FATTIG ASHLAND -- Wanted: folks whose deep love for the Klamath-Siskiyou region has driven them to putting those feelings down on paper. Or even those who have long thought about writing down the feelings they have for the unique region. The Ashland-based environmental group Headwaters is seeking contributions from writers or would-be writers throughout the region for an anthology the group plans to publish late this summer. The deadline for submitting material is March 31. Anyone, whether he or she belongs to an environmental group or wears logger's caulk boots, is encouraged to submit writings in the form of poetry or prose. "We would invite anyone's voice," said Susan Cross, project coordinator for Headwaters. "People's love of the place can take a lot of different forms." The goal is to get as many varied submissions as possible for a book that is expected to be 80 to 100 pages, she said. An editorial panel will select the top entries. "We're hoping to tap into personal experiences with the landscape, and build the anthology around that," Cross said. The project took root during a workshop last fall in which prominent nature writers gathered in Ashland to talk about their craft. Co-sponsoring the event was the Massachusetts-based Orion Society and the Klamath-Siskiyou Alliance, which includes Headwaters. It was during the workshop that essayist Robert Michael Pyle and poets Kim Stafford and Linda Hussa suggested that the region's stories be collected and published as a way to capture its unique nature. Headwaters has since been awarded a grant for the project from the World Wildlife Fund and a patron of the arts, Cross said. She did not indicate the amount of the grant. There is no fee for submitting or pay for being selected for the nonfiction project. Essays and prose are limited to 2,500 words. Poetry must be no more than 50 lines. Only previously unpublished work will be accepted. Line drawings and photographs are also welcomed, Cross said. "What we're looking for are people experiences," she said, reiterating the group hopes to gather a vast variety of submissions. "We're going to make it as broad as we can get it." The Klamath-Siskiyou region covers the area from Roseburg south to Redding, and east to the coast. Submissions should be sent to: Susan Cross, Headwaters, P.O. Box 729, Ashland, OR 97520.
