The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported a deputy tried to pull over 50-year-old John Lehnherr at about 4:37 p.m. near the intersection of Old Stage Road and Scenic Avenue. Lehnherr, who Sgt. Rick Kennedy said was driving somewhere between 95 and 100 mph, did not stop, and the deputy did not give chase after losing sight of him. He crashed about a minute after fleeing. “As (the deputy) continued up the road, he observed kind of a dust cloud, other things, other cars that were struck in the road,” sheriff's department Capt. Nathan Sickler said. The crash happened at about 4:38 p.m. on Tolo Road, just north of Willow Springs Road, which is off Scenic Avenue and runs north toward Interstate 5 and Highway 99. Kennedy said the man was dead when police and emergency responders arrived at the scene. Tolo Road was shut down between Nellis Frontage Avenue and Tioga Way during the primary response, though it didn't create much of a problem for drivers, Kennedy said. "That whole area was shut down, but it was Sunday, later afternoon," he said. "We probably diverted six cars." The case remains under investigation by the Jackson County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team, with Medford police serving as the primary investigative agency.
