Roseburg blanks Klamath Union ROSEBURG - Rod Cope ran over, around and through Klamath Union at Finlay Field on Friday night. The Roseburg senior tailback rushed for over 200 yards for the second straight week and scored five touchdowns as the undefeated and second-ranked Indians smashed Klamath Union 44-0 in Southern Oregon Conference football. It was the Indians second shutout of the season and the third time they've held an SOC opponent without a touchdown. Cope scored four touchdowns on the ground and another through the air. Cope's 203-yard effort against the Pels puts him over 1,000 yards rushing on the season. Joe Newton, a two-time SOC first-team all-conference performer, did not play because of a knee injury suffered against Grants Pass last week. But the Indians obviously didn't need Newton's services. Roseburg capitalized on a short field to register its first touchdown with 7:34 left in the opening quarter. The Indians' drive began at the KU 33. After a 25-yard completion from quarterback Adam Hazel to senior receiver Cory Whitman, Cope ran it in from the 8. The Indians went 53 yards in nine plays to score on a Cope 1-yard run at the 10:38 mark of the second quarter. With Roseburg facing a fourth-and-13 situation at the KU 32, Cope broke loose down the middle and caught a TD pass from Hazel with 3:15 left in the second quarter. The Pelicans pulled off their biggest offensive play of the game when D.J. Munoz went 64 yards on a reverse. But an interception at the Roseburg 16 ended the threat. Roseburg then drove 84 yards for its final TD of the first half on Cope's 9-yard run with just 56.9 seconds remaining to give the Indians a 25-0 lead In the first half, Hazel was a perfect 8-of-8 passing for 139 yards.
