St. Mary's duo garners top local softball honors Brophy, Jackson named to first team for Class 2A/1A By DUSTIN MELTON The duo of Lani Brophy and Shawna Jackson were honored once again for their excellent softball season by being named to the Class 2A/1A all-state first team. Brophy and Jackson, the District 6 League player of the year, were the only softball players from the valley to enjoy first-team honors. The senior St. Mary's standouts were pivotal in the Crusaders' District 6 championship and run in the Class 2A/1A state playoffs. The Crusaders went 17-7 and lost to North Douglas in the state quarterfinals. Brophy, a 5-foot-7 pitcher/first baseman, posted a 6-1 league record and a career mark of 41-17 in her four-year career at St. Mary's. She carried a 0.98 ERA in league competition and fanned 61 batters while allowing just 13 walks. Overall this season she went 8-4 with a 1.63 ERA and 106 strikeouts. At the plate Brophy batted .459 in league and .500 overall. She led the team in RBIs with 27, and had seven doubles, seven triples and one home run. "She had another solid year hitting," St. Mary's softball coach Robin Snider said. "She's always been a very consistent hitter and always hits well with runners on base." Jackson, a catcher, had a tremendous season at the plate. She hit .472 in league play with an on-base percentage of .548 and stole 15 bases. For the season she hit .486 with an on-base percentage of .584 and stole a total of 33 bases. Jackson totaled 69 stolen bases in three years with the Crusaders. Jackson was just as potent behind the plate as the senior catcher threw out three runners in league play and 10 in 24 games overall. "She was one of the smallest catchers in the league but she had a really strong arm," Snider said. "Her size threw people off initially and she threw them out right away. She made a solid defensive effort the whole year." Continuing the Crusader all-state selections theme, Sarah Fetty joined her teammates by being named to the third team. Fetty, a junior pitcher and center fielder, hit .407 overall and went 4-0 in league with a 1.52 ERA. She walked just three batters and struck out 31 in 23 innings. In center field Fetty consistently came up with defensive gems. "She makes a lot of the tough plays look pretty easy," Snider said. "Defensively she came up with the big plays all season long." Also earning all-state distinctions were Cascade Christian juniors Whitney Brookins and Laural Kelley and senior Rebekah Gettman. Brookins and Gettman were named to the third team, while Kelly was an honorable mention selection. In the Class 4A selections, seniors Erin Goodell and Molly Liston of Roseburg were the only members of the Southern Oregon Conference to be tabbed for first-team honors. Haley Varley and Steph Coe of North Medford were named to the second team. Coe, who made the second team as a designated hitter/utility player, was also selected as a third-team pitcher. Seanna Doyel of Grants Pass was also a second-team selection, while Leanne Foster of Crater was named to the third team. In the Class 3A selections, Ollie Herbert and Emily Mills from Henley made the second team, while teammate Krystal Young was selected to the third team. Jenice Brasser of Mazama was a second-team selection, while Rogue River's Allison Bailey was named to the third team.
